Reader’s Question:

My drivers license was suspended because of possession of marijuana. I just want to know if I will still be required to obtain an SR22 here in San Antonio Texas. Thank you!

Mr. Garrett

San Antonio Texas

In Texas, the penalties for possession of marijuana includes up to 180 days of jail time and/or a fine of two thousand dollars. Your drivers license will also be suspended after conviction for 180 days or 6 months.

Aside from the above penalties and fees, you will also be required to complete a drug education program that usually takes within 180 days until completion of the certificate received by the Texas DPS.

Here are the reinstatement requirements for marijuanna possession violation:

1. reinstatement fee prior to the issuance of the drivers license

2. SR22 filed to your car insurance provider and will need to be submitted to the Texas DPS. Normally, SR22 is required to be maintained for two years from the conviction date.

3. complete drug education program

This means that you will be required to carry an SR22 insurance after 6-month suspension fo your drivers license.

All you need to do is to contact your car insurance provider regarding SR22 filing and see if they offer these type of insurance.
