Reader’s Question:

What documents can be considered as proof of my San Antonio car insurance?

Vince

San Antonio, TX

Various documents can be presented as proof that you have an existing San Antonio car insurance. Firstly, the insurance identification card should be carried at all times when driving. This has to have the correct start and end dates of coverage to avoid being accused of driving an expired insurance coverage. It can also be in the form of a letter or binder from the authorized insurance broker or representative of the company. The letter has to bear the insurance company’s letterhead. If you have neither of these, then you can always present your San Antonio car insurance policy. This document has to have the complete information on your vehicle identification number, the company name of your insurer, the policy number and expiration date of your coverage.

If you do not have your own car but chose to purchase your own non owner San Antonio car insurance, then a DMV Certificate of self insurance that includes the name of the vehicle owner will be honored as proof of insurance as well. Bear in mind that any of these documents have to be presented when questioned by the police to avoid headaches. If you however happened to be pulled over and are not able to present any of the said documents, you will be given ten days from the date of citation to appear before the TX Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and present the requested proof of financial responsibility.

Reader’s Question:

In a DWI conviction here in Texas, is an SR22 car insurance still needed even with the presence of an insurance policy?

Paul

San Antonio, TX

If a person gets convicted with a DWI in Texas, it is likely that his or her driver’s license would get suspended. A driver with a suspended license has to obtain an SR-22 as mandated by Texas’ state laws. According to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) of Texas, a driver with a suspended license has to obtain an SR-22 car insurance to ensure that his future is insured. The SR-22 car insurance is also a requirement when getting the suspended license reinstated. Other requirements for license reinstatement after a DWI conviction are:

1. Payment of the reinstatement fee prior to the issuance of the license
2. Proof of auto insurance (SR-22) from the insurance company
3. DWI Education Program proof of completion for repeat offenders (as required by the court)

When a driver’s license is suspended and proof of financial responsibility is needed, the SR-22 should be presented. Only the SR-22 can be acknowledged by the state, therefore a person’s personal insurance policy (other than the SR-22) will not stand as a proof of his or her financial responsibility. It is not possible to keep an SR-22 car insurance and a separate insurance policy at the same time. If the insurance company is open to filing SR-22, car insurance then it is fine to keep them. Otherwise, cancel the current insurance policy and find another insurance company that offers SR-22 car insurance.

Q: What is San Antonio SR22 insurance?

A: A San Antonio SR22 is a form which serves as proof of responsibility, which is to say, proof that you are insured to drive. While most people can show proof of financial responsibility by simply displaying their insurance card on the right occasions, some drivers must have an SR22 on file with the Texas Department of Public Safety in addition to that. Why? Because, after a license suspension, you are required to file an SR22 for a certain period of time before you can stop doing so without risking license suspension.

An SR22 is a costly form of insurance, but for many people necessary. Many ways exist for you to get hit with an SR22 requirement, such as being convicted of driving while intoxicated, driving without insurance, or racking up too many points gathered from tickets in too short a period of time.

In Texas, you have to file your SR22 for two years in almost all cases. If you don’t do so, then your driver’s license can once again be suspended. After the two year period has ended, you no longer need to file your SR22, but you might still pay higher insurance prices.
